A CONVERSATION WITH GOD

“Wait a minute. Are you trying to tell me you’re God?”

“I’m not trying to tell you anything.”

“Then why are we having this conversation?”

“I don’t know. You stopped me. Didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did. Sorry. Must have been a mistake.”

“Yours, not mine.”

“Wait a minute. Where are you going?”

“Now what do you want?”

“I want to know the mystery of life.”

“You’re kidding.”

“No, I’m not kidding. I want to know.”

“Look, pal. It’s not that big of a mystery.”

“Humor me.”

“That’s very funny. If I did tell you the truth, you wouldn’t believe me. No one does.”

“Why not?”

“Search me.”

“Search you? What are you a comedian?”

“Trust me. It helps.”

“Come on. Throw me a bone.”

“Throw you a bone? Now, who’s the comedian? The answer is very simple — look in a mirror.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Of course not, but the answer is there. Who do you see in the mirror?”

“I see me, so what?”

“And who is me? What makes you you?”

“I don’t know. I just am.”

“Memories, that’s all you are, just memories. Take the memories away and …?”

“Oh, I see what you mean. Nothing.”

“Not quite. It’s a lot like burlesque. Nothing is as it seems. Think about it.”

“You’re frightening me.”

“Perhaps you should be frightened. Maybe everyone should be frightened.”

“What’s the point?”

“Ah, now we come to the mystery of life — what’s the point?”

“Is there one?”

“Of course there is. Think about it.”

“I am.”

“No, you’re not. You’re still inside the envelope.”

“How the hell do I get out?”

“Here, take my hand.”

“Oh, my god.”

“Got it?”

“Yes, oh, yes.”

“So, what’s the answer?”

“I am.”

“Yes, you are.”
