99 Birthday Balloons

By Anthony E

Grandpa was turning 99

What do you get someone turning 99?

I thought of getting him a plant

But it might die

Maybe I should get him a shirt

Or a nice red tie

Red is his favorite color

He use to wear a red Coca Cola hat

Heck I could buy him coke

But his diabetes would say no to that

So I got him 99 balloons

All the color of red

He'd really enjoy that

I said loudly in my head

They were not too small or too big

The balloons were about medium

They were bright bright red

And were filled with helium

As I walked the balloons home

All the way from the party store

I saw two little girls

That I could not ignore

Thry were crying because

Their ice cream fell on some dog poo

I gave them 3 balloons each

That's what Grandpa would do

I walked a little further

I saw 8 sad kids looking up high

Their kite was stuck in a tree
I gave them 2 balloons each as I walked by

Grandpa would want me to share

Grandpa was always doing that

He'd share his lunch with a stranger

He'd even share his milk

With Rufus his one eyed cat

A flock of pigeons appeared

They popped all my balloons

I was sad I was mad

Now what was I to do

But I remembered that Grandpa taught me

Not to be mad over the small things

To look for kindness and happiness

And all the good that it brings

So as I was heading into the house

I saw out of the corner of my eye

His old Coca Cola hat in a bush

It was musty and dusty and dry

I had no balloons as I walked

Walked in the door

Grandpa was in his favorite chair

I could hear his loud snore

His eyes opened

And his smile spread over his chin

He saw me his grandson

That was present enough for him

I told him the crazy story

About all the balloons and all that

He listened and smiled

While wearing his dusty old hat

He later told me about his

Best present yet

It was my love and my kindness

And kindness don't cost a cent.
