But They Did

When he threw the nail clippers at her, he didn't mean for them to pierce her eye. But they did. And he went to prison for life.

In all the months of rage and years of regret that followed, he could never see the color blue without also seeing red.

When people talked about him, they talked about his nails.

When he was alone, he often cried-- cried tears just like yours, or mine, or any other human's.

But he couldn't atone.
