Conductor
The music swelled: the strings, brass and woodwind instruments along with the percussionists played together in perfect harmony, producing a sound that must have thrilled the heart of the composer all those years ago. Bigger, faster and louder, the sound reached its crescendo, ending in a crash of cymbals and a prolonged note on the violins. Then silence.
I waited for the thunderous applause that should have followed my performance as conductor of the world’s most prestigious orchestra. Unfortunately, my baton was a feather duster, my ‘audience’ a bank of filing cabinets at the office where I was a cleaner.
