Creaker

By Aaron Sebastians

I was watching a movie on the couch late at night and I heard some creaking and moaning of wooden boards above me.

Didn’t really think about it as the house is pretty old.

So I brought my attention back to the movie.

A few moments later, the creaking and moaning happened again.

This time longer.

I paused the movie and listened staring at the tv screen.

It was quiet now.

“That’s weird,” I thought to myself.

As soon as I was about to press play, a thud sounded above me on the second floor.

I immediately got off the couch caught off guard and stared at the ceiling peaking my instincts trying to listen.

Slowly walking to the upstairs, I kept my ears perked.

Little squeaks and creaks sounded, but nothing big.

I made my way listening to the small sounds and came to the spare bedroom door.

Pressing my ear against it and I heard a soft depressed voice.

"Forgive me Father for I have sinned."

A breathing gulp rang as cracks and moans came from inside.

Twisting the door knob, I held onto it going back in forth in my head wanting to open the door, but physically can't

as a crash rang and shallow breathing became rampant

Listening to it horrified, I closed my eyes and slightly pushed the door open.

The breathing stopped.

Slowly the door swings steadily and I open my eyes

to see a knocked over chair

and an old man dangling

with a woman's dead body on the floor.
