Does This Happen to Anyone Else?

I'm extremely NOT a writer who outlines stories. I'll be struck with a burst of inspiration, a character, or a world, maybe just a mood. Sometimes a song inspires a story.
Whatever the case, I sit down to write it and dive right in, figuring things out as I go.
That's probably why I never finish anything.
ANYWAY, sometimes I start writing something, and the inspiration is either really vague, or confusing, or just not there. Often when I'm feeling apathetic towards writing, this weird thing will happen. I'll be writing, going along, trying to portray the characters and tell a story, and all of a sudden BAM! I'm extremely concerned by what I've just created.
Do you ever pause and just wonder "why?" "Where did THIS come from?"
