Human Nature (Ανθρώπινη φύση)

-From the Meletic Scrolls.

Human nature is a topic that has been explored for centuries, yet it remains as relevant today as it was in the philosophical discourses of the past. We are endowed with certain qualities that exhibit our inherent characteristics, shaping our identity and our understanding of existence. Human nature, in its essence, is deeply linked to nature itself, not only in a physical sense, but in a metaphysical sense also.

From the moment of our birth, we are placed into the state of imperfection. This implies that we are not perfect beings in our bodies, nor in our understanding. The nature of imperfection does not signify deficiency. Instead, it represents the reality of our existence that we are constantly evolving, learning and growing. Our composition consists of not only our physical structure, it also consists of our intrinsic essence. This essence is formed by the combination of our atoms, souls, selves and ousias that are the fundamental essence that constitutes our being. These elements, situated within our physical forms, serve as the foundation of what we define as human nature.

Nature is not merely an external force that surrounds us; it is a force that sustains us, nourishes us and affirms our existence through the process of life. Without nature, our physical being would not persist, and without the philosophical understanding of nature, our intellectual and metaphysical being would lack depth.

Human nature is a guiding force that teaches us the fundamental distinction, between our conduct and our actions. Conduct refers to the way we carry ourselves, the habits we cultivate and the principles we uphold, whereas actions are the immediate expressions of our decisions. Through the observation of our nature, we begin to understand the significance of virtues and what they represent in our deeds. The practice of virtues is essential to the cultivation of our ethos, which is our character and moral disposition.

Additionally, human nature grants us the ability to reflect on our thoughts, emotions and decisions. It enables us to question the authenticity of our actions and whether they align with our true intentions. In many philosophical discourses, human nature is often contrasted with human attributes. Attributes, such as intelligence, creativity or temperament serve the purpose of identification, but they do not necessarily indicate our moral evolution. To truly realise our human nature, we must first comprehend the deeper essence of nature itself.

Nature, in its true form is not intricate beyond our understanding. It operates in an observable and predictable manner, and it is through this consistency that we come to discern its unique patterns. The laws of nature govern the cosmos, from the smallest atom to the grandest celestial bodies. These laws are impartial, unchanging and unaffected by human perception.

What ties nature to human nature is our active consciousness. It is through consciousness that we perceive the world, interpret our surroundings and engage with reality. Our consciousness is a gateway that allows us to explore the interconnection of all things. Unlike other species, which function primarily on instinct, we possess the ability to question, to reason and to seek purpose beyond mere survival.

We reside within the continuous plane of reality, where nature and existence unfold simultaneously. The more we become aware of this reality, the more we begin to understand our place within it. Human nature is not something then separate from the world; it is an extension of the natural world, shaped by experience, perception and thought.

Our character defines the fundamental essence of our human nature. In philosophical traditions, the soul is often regarded as the guiding force that assists the mind in navigating our interactions and deliberations. Through the soul, we experience the depth of our emotions, whilst through the mind, we engage in rational thought. Together, they contribute to the development of our humanity, which is our ability to empathise, to reason and to cultivate virtues. It is the ousia that defines our human nature.

Human nature is intricately linked with rationality. The capacity to think, analyse and make decisions based on wisdom distinguishes us from other beings. The mind provides us with the necessary access to use our consciousness effectively. If our consciousness is the key to understanding, then the mind is the instrument that allows us to explore it.

Just as nature sustains itself through balance and harmony, our human nature thrives when we achieve equilibrium between the body, mind and soul. When these three aspects are in alignment, we experience clarity, purpose and fulfilment. However, imbalance occurs, when the mind is confused, the body neglected, the soul ignored, and our perception of reality becomes distorted, leading to confusion and internal conflict.

Wisdom and logic are the conceptual instruments that guide us in our journey through consciousness. Wisdom is gained through experience, reflection and understanding, whilst logic provides the structural basis for rational thought. Together, they serve as tools that help us navigate the unique complexities of life and the intricacies of human nature.

The more we realise that we are a part of an evolving cycle that is influenced by nature and shaped by experience, the more we begin to fully understand the optimal balance of our existence. We study, we observe and we interpret our own qualities, distinguishing between what is inherent and what is acquired. This process of self-discovery allows us to refine our character and deepen our understanding of our actual place in the universe.

By appreciating the true value of nature, we learn to appreciate life itself. There are natural laws that we obey, just as there are philosophical teachings that we adhere to its practice. The study of human nature reveals to us a unique perception of human observation, which are the certain patterns of thought and action that define our daily existence.

Life is the ultimate connection between humanity and nature. We are not an overly complex species in terms of our needs and functions, yet we often overcomplicate our perception of reality. Whilst we exist within the physical boundaries of nature, nature itself transcends our immediate perception. There are countless aspects of nature that remain beyond our knowledge, yet what we should strive to understand is its universal function, which is the reason it is relevant to our existence.

To be one with nature is to be one with oneself. This is the simplicity of life. True understanding does not require grand complexity; rather, it is found in the ability to perceive the primary truths that already exist. (To Ένa) the One gave us nature, and through nature, we have been granted the ability to understand our human nature. It is through this understanding that we cultivate wisdom, seek enlightenment and embrace the journey of existence.

In Meleticism, human nature is deeply intertwined with To Ena, the fundamental principle that underlies all existence. Human nature is seen as both an individual expression and a reflection of the cosmic unity of To Ena. Every person, though distinct in experiences and actions, carries the potentiality to discern and align with this unity. The natural state of humanity is one of awareness and interconnection, but it is often disrupted by distractions, desires and misconceptions. Meleticism teaches that by practicing self-reflection, meditation and living virtuously, individuals can transcend these limitations and reconnect with To Ena, realising their true essence (ousia) and their place within the cosmic flow. Thus, human nature in Meleticism is viewed not as separate from the cosmos, but as part of the same interconnected whole that forms the foundation of all existence.

Human nature is not a mystery to be unraveled; it is a reality to be lived, experienced and understood. It is defined by the ousia, but developed by the mind. It is through our actions, our virtues and our conscious awareness that we shape the path of our existence. Just as nature continues its eternal cycle, so too does the evolution of human thought, forever seeking truth, meaning and harmony.
