
The screams pulled me from sleep and I opened my eyes just as the nightstand clock's display changed from 11:57 to 11:58. I listened as the sounds drew closer. They couldn't be more than a block away.
Curiosity is strong. Even when you know what's there.
I stood and crossed the dark bedroom, careful not to trip on the mound of dirty clothes between the bed and the window. Pulling apart the blinds with two fingers, I peered down onto the street. From my second story apartment I had a clear view, and as it trundled brokenly down the road on its twisted brittle-boned legs and the agonized sounds reached a peak, I wondered if there wasn't anything the city could do about it.
They had managed dangerous men and they had managed dangerous animals. So why not this? Why not this.
