It’s Our Independence Day!

By JPYoung

Once upon a village green,

On fair Massachusetts land.

Marching redcoats could be seen,

Where true-blue minutemen stand.

‘Rabble! Get out of our way!’

‘NO! It’s independence day!’

*

Early on a hot morning,

Fly flags of red, white and blue.

Firecrackers bang warning.

Cherry bombs and rockets too!

‘They’re too loud! What do you say?’

‘Hell! It’s Independence Day!’

*

Three men parade down the street,

Sergeant Ray holds Old Glory,

Stash and Pete’s rifles replete.

Our patriotic story!

The Guard march proud; they don’t sway.

‘It’s our Independence Day!’

*

Fireworks in a starry sky…

Boys and girls give ‘ahhhhhs!’ and ‘ooooohs!’

‘American ‘till we die!’

All watching have the same views.

Here we are and here we’ll stay.

‘It’s our Independence Day!’
