little marie

By Hermione Malfoy

Little Marie lived with her mother, father, and best friend.

And little Marie didn’t understand

Why the adults always closed the door talked in low voices

So Leland held her hand.

It’s alright, he told her one night,

Do not be frightened.

But little Marie still wondered

Why the knots in her stomach tightened.

One night little Marie was in bed

And she heard the adults whispering in the room below.

She swept her feet out of bed

And went downstairs with her candle aglow.

She paused at the bottom stair

She could hear her mother hiccup.

Marie will not stay young forever, her mother said.

Little Marie has to grow up.

Marie stopped, her candle shaking.

What had her mother just said?

The adults continued to talk

And her heart was filled with dread.

Marie, why are you awake? said a voice.

Little Marie turned, and there was Leland, standing there.

They said I must grow up, said Maire.

And then she turned back to the stairs.

Wait, said Leland, catching Marie’s hand.

If you have to grow up, I will too.

If you have to leave,

I will go with you.

Little Marie thought.

She didn’t know if she stood there or cried.

But she knew that she went to bed eventually

But the thoughts swirled in her mind.

But soon she realized that her mother was right.

She must grow up, she must not fake.

All the cruel things of the world

All the sadness, all the heartache.

But little Marie did grow up

And she wasn’t so little anymore.

She married Leland and had three children

To which she told the same story forever more.
