I know a girl who walks
Behind me in the halls
Tries to melt into the
Crowd or even the walls
She used to stand upright
With pride laced in her spine
Now she walks slumped with
The world’s weight consigned
Her sparkling green eyes have
long since lost their bold shine
Dulled to a sad, rainy gray
To keep you from her shoreline
I haven’t seen a smile on
Her soft, paled desert lips
In so long and the words
She whispers seem like script
Her eyes have sunk like stained
Trenches painted with shadows
Though her pain seems evident
No one seems to really know
She occupies a place
In space that goes unheard
A place that’s passed by
And no one says a word
This girl’s name is Depression
A constant figure in our lives
She follows you until you see
All the happiness she deprives
She’s a haunting shadow
For those who can’t escape
Her dark, hunched enmity
That drowns you like a wave
Though, there is one thing she
Fears and that is real help
So if you truly wish to be free
All your sorrow must be dealt
