The Exchange
“Did you bring it?†He looked at me hopefully from behind the tree.
“Of course I did,†I answered, looking around, “Did you bring my little payment?â€
“Yes, I have it here,†he looked down and patted his jacket pocket.
“Perfect,†I said as I came closer, hiding behind the tree. “Did anyone follow you here?â€
“No, thank God,†he answered, still nervously looking around him. “There was a close one, but I lost him.â€
“Good,†I said. “It was hard enough bringing up my part of the bargain.â€
“What happens if we get caught?†he asked, looking fearful.
“Don’t,†I replied. “The people here are ruthless. If anyone tells, we’re done for.â€
A new flash of fear crossed his eyes. He was right to be afraid.
“After this exchange, we act as if this never happened.†I pressed on. “Understand?â€
He nodded his head. “Yes.â€
“Let’s finish this up quickly,†I said.
We both fished out our goods, ready to complete our exchange.
As he gave me his dollar bill, I handed over my candy bar, and we both headed back to the playground.
