The Familiar Night
By Amber Jones
I stepped into the light of an aching sun
And the last breaths of a sinking dawn
Watched as all the droplets of the night
Slipped below as if they’d withdrawn
I burned as the sunlight touched my skin
Whispered curses into the retreating night
For the night was a familiar place to me
And the unknown of the day too bright
If I could find a way to lasso the moon
Bring its glimmering silver to my side
I might make it through the glaring day
With its dear shimmering as my guide
