-From the Meletic Scrolls.

Life in its simplest form, presents itself as a journey of experience, thought and existence. Within this journey lie profound questions that each of us must grapple with at some point in our lives. What is the meaning of life? What is the purpose? Why do we exist? The nine contemplations of life as explored in Meleticism, offer insights into these fundamental queries, pushing us to examine the deeper layers of existence through conscious reflection and introspection. This exploration into life, its challenges, its rewards, and its essence is not just an intellectual exercise; it is a path towards a greater understanding and enlightenment, an essential part of our journey as humans.

1. What is the Meaning of Life?
The first contemplation delves into the overarching question of life's meaning. This enquiry seeks to explore the fundamental nature of life itself, which is what does life represent in its entirety? In contemplating the meaning of life, we are not just considering the events that unfold, the actions we take or the evanescent
moments of joy or suffering we encounter. Instead, we are prompted to think about the collective experience, the interconnection of all things, and the broader purpose behind the patterns of life. To contemplate life’s meaning is to observe it with a sense of wonder and curiosity, embracing the idea that life is more than just a series of random occurrences. It is about reflecting on how life fits into the grand design of the universe, and what role that we as individuals, assume in that greater whole.

2. What is the Purpose of Life?
Building upon the meaning of life, the second contemplation explores the purpose of existence. The purpose of life is a question that has occupied philosophers, scientists and thinkers for centuries. What does life present in its challenge? What are we meant to do with the limited time we have? Life is not just about existing; it is about engaging with the world, overcoming obstacles and seeking to fulfill a specific purpose or destiny. In contemplating the purpose of life, we are invited to examine our individual goals, desires and dreams. Are we fulfilling our purpose through our work, relationships and actions, or are we drifting through life without a clear sense of direction? Understanding the purpose of life encourages us to take responsibility for our existence and to actively participate in shaping the course of our lives.

3. What is the Reason for Life?
In the third contemplation, we move from the purpose of life to the practical aspect of what is the reason behind life’s existence? What does life offer in its practicality? This contemplation focuses on the tangible, everyday aspects of life. It asks us to reflect on how life operates on a practical level through work, interaction, survival and our daily routines. Whilst the previous questions may explore the philosophical and metaphysical nature of life, this contemplation grounds us in the reality of living. It reminds us that life’s reason is not always grandiose or abstract; it can often be found in the simple, practical elements that allow us to survive, thrive and contribute to the world around us. By understanding the reason for life in practical terms, we are better equipped to live with great purpose and intention.

4. What is the Fulfilment of Life?
Fulfilment is a deeply personal concept, yet it is central to our overall experience of life. The fourth contemplation asks us to consider what life rewards in its state of being. What does fulfilment look like in life, and how can we achieve it? Fulfilment is often associated with achieving personal goals, cultivating meaningful relationships and finding contentment in our own skin. However, fulfilment is not always something that comes from external sources. It is a state of being that is shaped by our inner peace, satisfaction and alignment with our values. In contemplating the fulfilment of life, we are encouraged to reflect on what brings us joy and how we can cultivate a sense of purpose and contentment, regardless of external circumstances. Fulfilment, after all, is an internal experience that can only be attained through self-awareness and conscious living.

5. What is the Truth About Life?
Truth is an elusive concept, yet it is something we all seek in our own way. The fifth contemplation asks us to reflect on what life provides in its guidance. What is the truth that life offers, and how can we come to recognise it? Truth in life is not always evident or easy to define, but it can be found in our experiences, our reflections, and our ability to discern between illusion and reality. The truth about life is not necessarily something that can be learnt from external sources alone; it is something that we must come to understand within ourselves. Life’s guidance helps us navigate the important complexities of existence, offering us moments of clarity, insight and revelation as we move through our journey.

6. What is the Wisdom of Life?
Wisdom is the culmination of knowledge, experience and insight. The sixth contemplation invites us to reflect on what life teaches in its knowledge. Life through its challenges and rewards offers us countless lessons, if we are open to receiving them. The wisdom of life is not just about intellectual understanding; it is about learning from experience, developing intuition and cultivating a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Through contemplation and introspection, we begin to see that wisdom is not something that is simply acquired; it is something that is discovered within us, as we align ourselves with the flow of life and its inherent lessons.

7. What is the Source of Life?
The source of life is a question that touches upon the fundamental origin of our existence. The seventh contemplation explores what life includes in its originality. Where does life come from? What is the natural source of our being, our consciousness, and our essence? Some may look to science, others to spirituality or philosophy for answers, but the contemplation of the source of life encourages us to consider both the physical and metaphysical dimensions of existence. Whether we view life as a divine gift, a biological process or a mysterious cosmic phenomenon, contemplating its source helps us appreciate the mystery and wonder of our existence. It reminds us that life is not simply a random occurrence; it is part of a larger, interconnected whole.

8. What is the Enjoyment of Life?
The eighth contemplation invites us to reflect on the enjoyment of life. What does life symbolise in its plenitude? Enjoyment in life is not just about pleasure or gratification; it is about embracing the fullness of experience, such as joy, sorrow, triumph and failure, which are all of it. To enjoy life is to be fully present in each moment, appreciating the beauty and complexity of the world around us. Life is a gift, and the enjoyment of it comes from recognising its value and engaging with it wholeheartedly. In contemplating the enjoyment of life, we are encouraged to embrace the richness of existence, to savour the temporary moments of joy, and to find meaning even in the struggles and challenges.

9. What is the Essence of Life?
Finally, the ninth contemplation asks us to explore the essence of life itself. What does life reflect in its nature? The essence of life is not something that can be easily defined, but it is something that can be felt and experienced. It is the core of our existence, the underlying energy that drives us forth. The essence of life is what makes us human, what connects us to one another, and what binds us to the universe. To contemplate the genuine essence of life is to connect with the fundamental truth of our existence and to understand our place within the greater cosmic order.

All of these nine questions point to a profound understanding of life that transcends the physical world and invites us to reflect on our inner selves. Meleticism teaches us that life is not just a series of random events; it is a journey of discovery, growth and transformation. Through contemplation, introspection and meditation, we understand life in its many dimensions with its meaning, purpose, reason, fulfilment, truth, wisdom, source, enjoyment and essence. Life in all its complexity is both a challenge and a gift. It is a journey that we must engage with consciously, embracing its mysteries and its beauty. In doing so, we move closer to the realisation of our true selves and the deeper understanding of the universe around us.

Life is not merely something that happens to us; it is something that we must actively engage with, observe and reflect upon. Through this active engagement, we begin to live more fully, and in turn, we are better equipped to navigate the unique complexities of existence and (To Ένa) the One.
