The Proverbs (Οι Παροιμίες)

-From the Meletic Scrolls.

Within the philosophy of Meleticism, there are words of wisdom that are called in Greek (Oi Paroimíes). They are equivalent to proverbs. These proverbs are only a few of many more that enrich the teachings and practice of Meleticism. Life is meant to be understood within its simplicity, and wisdom makes us more conscious about the presence of the soul and self.

1. Man is first a foe unto himself.
Meaning: At times, our greater obstacles and burdens are created by us.

2. Wisdom is the ambrosia that feeds man knowledge
Meaning: Without wisdom, our knowledge is incomplete.

3. Build your inner temple, before it crumbles into pieces.
Meaning: Strengthen the body with the pillars of conviction.

4. Be true to yourself and life shall reward you with enlightenment.
Meaning: Discover the depth of the inner self and soul.

5. A man must be whole to understand his soul.
Meaning: Awaken consciousness and realise the journey in life.

6. Surrender the ego, before you surrender to it.
Meaning: The influence of the ego is present and imposing.

7. Live life to the fullest, and you shall find true happiness.
Meaning: Appreciate the simplicity of life, and it never take it for granted.

8. No man should rule over another man as a god.
Meaning: Humble the self and reflect the betterment of humanity.

9. Search for your path, amidst the darkness of uncertainties.
Meaning: Be inspired to seek the fulfilment of goals.

10. Virtues define our character.
Meaning: Build the self with meaning and attachment.

11. Vices corrupt the self.
Meaning: Avoid the influence of the ego and stray from its grasp.

12. Be the master of your will.
Meaning: Be conscious of the power that we possess from within.

13. Give and you shall reap more.
Meaning: Value diligence and commitment.

14. Think twice before you err once.
Meaning: Ponder decisions before acting.

15. Misery must never forsake your happiness.
Meaning: Establish the true meaning of life.

16. Be the voice to your consciousness.
Meaning: Express thoughts through reasoning.

17. Greed is envy and envy is the ego.
Meaning: Heed the lesson that materialism is a selfish desire.

18. Sacrifice is the ultimate relinquishment.
Meaning: The hardest thing to let go has the best result.

19. Truth is what sets a man free.
Meaning: Enlighten the mind with just principles.

20. Philosophy is the language of wise men.
Meaning: Explore the depth of knowledge.

21. It is easier to succumb to the taste of vengeance than thirst.
Meaning: Evokes the rationality of the self.

22. There is no greater imperfection than the concept of perfection.
Meaning: Conveys the idea that perfection is an illusion.

Meaning: Appreciate the truth and honesty.

Meaning: Be aware of unnecessary desires that are not healthy.

Meaning: Words epitomise the importance of knowledge.

27. Do not regret what cannot be changed.
Meaning: Remember to live in the present than past.

28. Find serenity in hope and hope in life.
Meaning: Strive in effort for a better future afterwards.

29. Death has many names, but only one outcome.
Meaning: Accept the eventuality of mortality.

30. A man who is good in his deeds is a man full of virtuousness.
Meaning: Character is built by the accomplishment of virtues.

31. When a man falters to his whims, he craves more his desires and less his humbleness.
Meaning: Distinguish the temptation between good and bad.

32. Cherish every day spent on living than complaining.
Meaning: We are not truly entitled anything.

33. No man is entitled a throne by mere birth.
Meaning: See the falsehood of man's superiority.

34. Give your best and learn the lesson of diligence.
Meaning: Motivate the self and consider its worth.

Meaning: Connect the mind, body and soul as one being.

Meaning: Show respect and follow an ethical path.

Meaning: Be wise towards others in their presence.

Meaning: Find hope and purpose in life.

Meaning: Recognise the need of others before our own.

Meaning: Adhere to the practice and usage of intellect.

41. Silence is the absence of sound, but not the absence of presence.
Meaning: Acknowledge the activity of the senses.

42. Empower the self and you shall master the ego.
Meaning: Demonstrate the will to overcome unnecessary temptations.

43. Do not walk behind your shadow.
Meaning: Be mindful of the burdens that linger in us.

44. Find purpose in your actions.
Meaning: Set a path that can be truly achieved.

45. Courage must be gained and not given.
Meaning: Never forsake the self amidst any adversity.

46. Fear not the image of death, for it cannot harm you, if you accept its fate.
Meaning: Embrace life and its final destination.

47. Nature is the breath of life.
Meaning: Never forget the essential things of simplicity.

48. To err in life is to acknowledge one's imperfections.
Meaning: Have self-awareness and self-acceptance.

49. Speak with words that reflect the truth and not deception.
Meaning: Be wiser than become a hypocrite.

50. Belief in the One is the many of existential things.
Meaning: Maintain unity with (To Ένa) and know its abundance.

51. Look beyond the image that reflects you and you shall find the
core of your soul.
Meaning: Care less about perfection and more about truths.

52. Do not succumb to your ego, for it shall destroy the self and lead you astray.
Meaning: Heed the self more than the whims of impermanence.

53. Wisdom is much more than the knowledge that you shall seek; it is the nourishment of the mind.
Meaning: Do not forsake intellect to fruitless endeavours.

54. Think not once, not twice, but thrice before you attach meaning to the relevance of something.
Meaning: Remember to be wiser than to be too precipitous in actions.

55. To discover the supreme good in ourselves, we must first recognise the good of our human nature.
Meaning: Be cognisant that we possess benevolence.

56. Eudaimonia can be expressed in manifold forms, but it can only be reached in its purest form through the pursuit of living.
Meaning: Seek fulfilment in the simplicity of things we value.

57. In virtues, one shall unveil one's innermost truth.
Meaning: Display character through deeds committed.

58. The body is the vessel to the mind, the soul is the realisation of self.
Meaning: Be reminded that we are composed of several things.

59. It is in the ousia that our existence is revealed to us as being universal.
Meaning: Never forget that mortality is not the end to existence.

60. Time is either the past or present, for it can never be the future that we have not yet lived.
-Meaning: Accept life for what it is, instead of what it cannot be.

61. Find solace in the joy of life than dwelling in the misery of doubt.
Meaning: Seek fulfilment in things that please us than torment us.

62. Man must be beholden to his self first than to the desires of the body.
-Meaning: Recognise first virtues then mere pleasures.

63. Temperance is a sign of strength than weakness.
Meaning: Be mindful of the virtue of patience.

64. Before you act on your desires, contemplate the consequences.
Meaning: Learn from mistakes and do not repeat them again.

65. The world is only the image of our creation.
Meaning: Do not forget to see the true nature of materiality.

66. To forsake the soul is is to forsake the self.
Meaning: Be united in the depth of the oneness.

67. Fate is the ultimate path to one's truth.
Meaning: Accept the permanence of mortality.

68. Belief in oneself is the revelation of the will.
Meaning: Do not be reduced to what others think.

Meaning: Live life to the fullest without any regrets.

Meaning: Do not be satisfied with what we presume to only know.

79. Through the expression of words, we learn to value the meaning of philosophy.
Meaning: Be mindful of capability to reason.

80. There is no worse crime than the crime of passion.
Meaning: Do not allow mental clarity to be so easily disrupted.

81. There is an inherent beauty in things that few people understand their nature.
Meaning: Be more conscious about the wonders of the surrounding world.

Meaning: Cherish every moment and experience the greatest joys shared.

Meaning: Do not take for granted the ability of rationality.

Meaning: Alignment with the One brings inner peace and courage.
