The Proverbs (Οι Παροιμίες)
-From the Meletic Scrolls.
Within the philosophy of Meleticism, there are words of wisdom that are called in Greek (Oi Paroimíes). They are equivalent to proverbs. These proverbs are only a few of many more that enrich the teachings and practice of Meleticism. Life is meant to be understood within its simplicity, and wisdom makes us more conscious about the presence of the soul and self.
1. Man is first a foe unto himself.
-It means that at times, we create our greater obstacles and burdens.
2. Wisdom is the ambrosia that feeds man knowledge.
-It means that without wisdom, our knowledge is incomplete.
3. Build your inner temple, before it crumbles into pieces.
-It means that we should strengthen the body with the pillars of our conviction.
4. Be true to yourself and life shall reward you with enlightenment.
-It means that we should discover the depth of our inner self and soul.
5. A man must be whole to understand his soul.
-It means that we should awaken our consciousness and realise our journey in life.
6. Surrender the ego, before you surrender to it.
-It means that the influence of the ego is present and imposing.
7. Live life to the fullest, and you shall find true happiness.
-It means that we should appreciate the simplicity of life, and it never take it for granted.
8. No man should rule over another man as a god.
-It means that we should humble the self and reflect the betterment of humanity.
9. Search for your path, amidst the darkness of uncertainties.
-It means that we should be inspired to seek the fulfilment of our goals.
10. Virtues define our character.
-It means that we should build the self with meaning and attachment.
11. Vices corrupt the self.
-It means that we should avoid the influence of the ego and stray from its grasp.
12. Be the master of your will.
-It means that we should be conscious of the power that we possess from within.
13. Give and you shall reap more.
-It means that we should value our diligence and commitment.
14. Think twice before you err once.
-It means that we should ponder our decisions before we act.
15. Misery must never forsake your happiness.
-It means that we should establish the true meaning of life.
16. Be the voice to your consciousness.
-It means that we should express our thoughts through reasoning.
17. Greed is envy and envy is the ego.
-It means that we should heed the lesson that materialism is a selfish desire.
18. Sacrifice is the ultimate relinquishment.
-It means that the hardest thing to let go has the best result.
19. Truth is what sets a man free.
-It means that we should enlighten our minds with just principles.
20. Philosophy is the language of wise men.
-It means that we should explore the depth of our knowledge.
21. It is easier to succumb to the taste of vengeance than thirst.
-It means that we should evoke the rationality of the self.
22. There is no greater imperfection than the concept of perfection.
-It means that we should convey the idea that perfection is an illusion.
23. A lie is just another name for deceit.
-It means that we should appreciate the truth and our honesty.
24. Covet not what the body tempts the mind.
-It means that we should be aware of unnecessary desires that are not healthy.
25. Gods are created by men who are powerful or powerless.
-It means that we have true authority over ourselves.
26. Words are either from ignorance or intelligence.
-It means that we should epitomise the importance of our knowledge.
27. Do not regret what cannot be changed.
-It means to remember to live in the present than past.
28. Find serenity in hope and hope in life.
-It means that we should strive in effort for a better future afterwards.
29. Death has many names, but only one outcome.
-It means that we should accept the eventuality our mortality.
30. A man who is good in his deeds is a man full of virtuousness.
-It means that our character is built by the accomplishment of our virtues.
31. When a man falters to his whims, he craves more his desires and less his humbleness.
-It means that we should distinguish the temptation between good and bad.
32. Cherish every day spent on living than complaining.
-It means that we are not truly entitled anything.
33. No man is entitled a throne by mere birth.
-It means that we should see the falsehood of man's superiority.
34. Give your best and learn the lesson of diligence.
-It means that we should motivate the self and consider its worth.
35. Meditation is the way to enlightening the mind.
-It means that we should connect the mind, body and soul as one being.
36. Treat others, as you would want to be treated.
-It means that we should show respect and follow an ethical path.
37. Be the philosopher and not the fool.
-It means that we should be wise towards others in their presence.
38. When you fall into despair, seek the guidance of the soul.
-It means that we should find hope in ourselves and purpose in life.
39. Be humble before others and others shall humble themselves.
-It means that we should recognise the need of others before our own.
40. Listen to the voice of reason.
-It means that we should adhere to the practice and usage of our intellect.
41. Silence is the absence of sound, but not the absence of presence.
-It means that we should acknowledge the activity of our senses.
42. Empower the self and you shall master the ego.
-It means that we are stronger in our will than we believe.
43. Do not walk behind your shadow.
-It means that we should be mindful of our burdens that linger in us.
44. Find purpose in your actions.
-It means that we should set a path that can be truly achieved.
45. Courage must be gained and not given.
-It means that we should never forsake the self amidst any adversity.
46. Fear not the image of death, for it cannot harm you, if you accept its fate.
-It means that we should embrace life and its final destination.
47. Nature is the breath of life.
-It means that we should not forget the essential things of simplicity.
48. To err in life is to acknowledge one's imperfections.
-It means that we should have self-awareness and self-acceptance.
49. Speak with words that reflect the truth and not deception.
-It means that we should be wiser than become a hypocrite.
50. Belief in the One is the many of existential things.
-It means that we should maintain our unity with (To Ένa) and know its abundance.
51. Look beyond the image that reflects you and you shall find the core of your soul.
-It means that we should care less about perfection and more about truths.
52. Do not succumb to your ego, for it shall destroy the self and lead you astray.-
It means that we should heed the self more than the whims of impermanence.
53. Wisdom is much more than the knowledge that you shall seek; it is the nourishment of the mind.
-It means that we should not forsake our intellect to fruitless endeavours.
54. Think not once, not twice, but thrice before you attach meaning to the relevance of something.
-It means that we should remember to be wiser than to be too precipitous in our actions.
55. To discover the supreme good in ourselves, we must first recognise the good of our human nature.
-It means that we should be cognisant that we possess benevolence.
56. Eudaimonia can be expressed in manifold forms, but it can only be reached in its purest form through the pursuit of living.
-It means that we should seek fulfilment in the simplicity of things we value.
57. In virtues, one shall unveil one's innermost truth.
-It means that we should display our character through our deeds committed.
58. The body is the vessel to the mind, the soul is the realisation of self.
-It means that we should remind ourselves that we are composed of several things.
59. It is in the ousia that our existence is revealed to us as being universal.
-It means that we should never forget that mortality is not the end to existence.
60. Time is either the past or present, for it can never be the future that we have not yet lived.
-It means that we should accept life for what it is, instead of what it cannot be.
61. Find solace in the joy of life than dwelling in the misery of doubt.
-It means that we should seek fulfilment in things that please us than torment us.
62. Man must be beholden to his self first than to the desires of the body.
-It means that we should recognise first our virtues then our pleasures
63. Temperance is a sign of strength than weakness.
-It means that we should be mindful of the virtue of patience.
64. Before you act on your desires, contemplate the consequences.
-It means that we should learn from our mistakes and not repeat them again.
65. The world is only the image of our creation.
-It means that we should not forget to see the true nature of materiality.
66. To forsake the soul is is to forsake the self.
-It means that we should be united in the depth of our oneness.
67. Fate is the ultimate path to one's truth.
-It means that we should accept the permanence of our mortality.
68. Belief in oneself is the revelation of the will.
-It means that we should not reduce ourselves to what others think of us.
69. To accept death is to embrace life.
-It means that we should live life to the fullest without any regrets.
70. There is no greater fulfilment than the path to enlightenment.
-It means that we should follow the presence of our consciousness and soul.
71. Think not of the dead in the past, but remember them in the present.
-It means that we should preserve the memories of our loved ones as they should be considered.
72. The semblance of nature is as vast as the cosmos.
-It means that we should think of the immensity of our present reality.
73. When we breathe life, we are
experiencing the soul.
-It means that we should should never forget that the essence of life is within us.
74. Serenity is a state of mind that is reached through consciousness.
-It means that we should traverse the high tides of thoughts to reach our equanimity.
75. Never heed the temptation of greed, for it shall consume you like a flame.
-It means that we should not covet the the things that will cause our downfall.
76. Allow your wisdom to grow with the seed of knowledge.
-It means that we should not be satisfied with what we presume to only know.
77. Ire is the worst of vengeance, for it knows no limits.
-It means that we should not falter to the whims of our madness.
78. Morality is not man's judgement, but man's truth.
-It means that we should be impartial in the ethics that we practise.
79. Through the expression of words, we learn to value the meaning of philosophy.
-It means that we should be mindful of our capability to reason.
80. There is no worse crime than the crime of passion.
-It means that we should not allow our mental clarity to be so easily disrupted.
81. There is an inherent beauty in things that few people understand their nature.
-It means that we should be more conscious about the wonders of our surrounding world.
82. Until we learn to value life, we cannot value ourselves.
-It means that we should cherish every moment and experience the greatest joys we share.
83. The power of the mind is as equal to the power of the will.
-It means that we should not take for granted the ability of rationality.
84. Be content with what you have than what you do not have.
-It means that we should treasure the things that have value and meaning.
85. Philosophy is both the expression of the mind and intellect.
-It means that we should embrace the wisdom of true knowledge.
86. Rational desires must never become irrational urges.
-It means that we should not succumb to fleeting temptations.
87. To be wise is to know that not everything can be understood with just words.
-It means that we should learn everything we can about life and its reality.
88. A good deed is measured by what we learn from that deed.
-It means that we should reflect on the weight of our actions committed.
89. Life should never be more than what we only desire from it.
-It means that we should see the simplicity of things that are meaningful.
90. It is better to heed the truth than the whispers of falsehood.
-It means that we should not believe in hearsay that has no validity.
91. Do not speak in riddles, but in words of wisdom.
-It means that we should always speak the truth that is worthy of knowledge.
92. Evil is seen in the actions of many, and good in actions of the few.
-It means that we should not follow in the footsteps of others who lead us astray.
93. Wealth is an illusion of one's greed.
-It means that we should not pursue materiality over virtues.
94. Judge not by the books of zealots, but by our wisdom.
-It means that we should not heed the words of self-righteousness.
95. Find strength in perseverance and you shall prevail over ignorance.
-It means that we should remain steadfast in our will and wisdom.
96. One who follows blind devotion shall remain lost.
-It means that we should not believe so easily in what others believe.
97. A god is only powerful, when one makes him powerful.
-It means that we should remember that we do need to give worship so blindly.
98. Existence is evidence of the One, and we are the multiplicity of existence.
-It means that we should realise that life begins and ends with a power greater than us.
99. Find solace amidst the face of adversity.
-It means that we should confront our hardships knowing that we have the strength to suceed.
100. The material world is merely our creation.
-It means that we should remind ourselves that we are innovators of our thoughts and reality.
