The Sophrosyne (Η Σωφροσύνη)

By Lorient Montaner

-From the Meletic Scrolls.

The human mind possesses an array of capacities, each contributing to the breadth and depth of our thoughts and ideas. These faculties are not merely passive functions of the brain; they represent the fundamental essence of our intellectual and emotional expression. One of the most significant aspects of the human mind is its ability to maintain clarity, balance and discernment, which ultimately governs our moral and intellectual life. This quality, integral to living a virtuous and meaningful existence is known in Greek philosophy, as the sophrosyne (Η Σωφροσύνη). It is a concept that signifies the harmony and soundness of the mind, aligning one’s character with rationality, emotional control and temperance. When properly nurtured, the sophrosyne leads to a life that encompasses a variety of virtues, such as fairness, prudence, self-control and moderation.

At its core, the sophrosyne represents more than just a set of moral guidelines. It is a state of being that governs both mind and body. It speaks to the inner balance that allows us to navigate the unique complexities of existence without being consumed by them. This inner equilibrium is an admirable attribute that influences how individuals approach life, others and themselves. It is the foundation for sound decision-making, the essence of moral behaviour, and the guiding force behind the cultivation of personal wisdom.

In the tradition of Meleticism, the sophrosyne is closely linked to the philosophy of self-discipline and self-awareness. It reflects an understanding of the deeper essence of the mind’s capabilities, whilst also acknowledging the important role of the body in maintaining mental health. Without the health and stability of our physical bodies, the mind cannot function at its full growth. Similarly, if the mind is disordered or overwhelmed by excessive passions, the physical body is negatively affected. The connection between the mind and the body is inseparable, and the well-being of each influences the other in profound ways.

The logos that which governs rationality, along with the nous, which stimulates our intelligence are the faculties that enable us to process and navigate the complex relation of thoughts, emotions and actions. They grant us the ability to reason, to see clearly and to discern the best path forward. These guiding principles help us maintain our equilibrium, which is necessary for both mental and physical well-being. The sophrosyne, in this sense, is not a passive state, but a dynamic force that continually works to align our inner selves with the world around us. It encourages us to make decisions that reflect our highest potentiality, which is rooted in wisdom, rationality and a deep understanding of both the self and the larger cosmos.

It is important to acknowledge that the sophrosyne does not imply moral or intellectual perfection. To claim that we can achieve perfection in a moral sense is a misunderstanding of the nature of human existence. Perfection, especially in the moral realm is a flawed concept, because it overlooks the inherent imperfection of humanity. We are beings who experience flaws, mistakes and contradictions, and it is through recognising and accepting these limitations that we can find true wisdom. Philosophy in its highest form does not ask us to strive for an unattainable ideal of perfection. Instead, it teaches us to value the beauty of life, to understand the nature of truth and to accept our humanity with grace and humility.

The acceptance of our imperfections is not a sign of weakness, but a mark of true wisdom. By embracing our flaws and learning from them, we grow in self-awareness and self-acceptance. This growth is vital to the development of a strong moral character. The sophrosyne, along with the practice of the phronesis (practical wisdom), enables us to understand the world around us and act with virtue. The virtues that emerge from the sophrosyne, such as temperance, self-control and rationality are necessary for navigating the challenges of life with integrity and purpose.

The sophrosyne is not a static virtue; it is a living quality that must be cultivated and practiced in every moment of our lives. It is through the cultivation of these virtues that we learn to understand the nature of things, and to act in harmony with both our internal desires and the external world. When we live with the sophrosyne, our thoughts and actions align with a deeper moral order, one that cultivates peace, harmony and a sense of connection with ourselves and the world.

It is important to understand that the sophrosyne does not simply involve moral behaviour. It also entails a keen awareness of our own internal states that are our thoughts, emotions and impulses. A person who embodies the sophrosyne is aware of the presence of the ego and is vigilant against its destructive influence. The ego, when left unchecked can cause detachment from the self, leading to a disintegration of character and a loss of connection with our true nature. The preservation of the self, then, is intimately tied to the well-being of the soul.

In our journey towards balance and wisdom, we must not confuse pride with arrogance or need with greed. These distortions of virtue can easily lead us astray, preventing us from achieving the clarity and understanding necessary for true fulfilment. The sophrosyne teaches us that the key to balance lies in distinguishing, between what is necessary for a meaningful life and what is merely driven by excessive desires or false beliefs. To seek balance in both the mind and the body is to acknowledge that the quality of our experiences depends not on external circumstances, but on our internal state of being. By cultivating the sophrosyne, we open ourselves to the possibility of living a life that is rich with meaning and authenticity.

Each experience in life is a unique opportunity to learn and grow. Every challenge, every hardship, and every moment of joy can teach us something valuable if we are willing to engage with it deeply. If we neglect our physical health or allow our minds to become shrouded by irrational thoughts and unchecked emotions, we risk losing touch with the intrinsic essence of our existence. Without balance, we fall into chaos. Our thoughts become irrational, and our bodies weaken. It is through the practice of the sophrosyne that we maintain a sense of coherence, clarity and vitality.

Wisdom, in this sense, is not merely the accumulation of knowledge, but the application of that knowledge in a way that is both rational and grounded in virtue. The sophrosyne requires that we use our wisdom not only in our thoughts but in our actions also. It calls us to be thoughtful, mindful and deliberate in all that we do, and to avoid rash decisions that arise from unchecked emotions or external pressures. In this way, the sophrosyne is a safeguard against the mind’s tendency to be led astray.

Meleticism as a philosophical practice is an embodiment of the principles of the sophrosyne. It encourages us to cultivate both mental and physical health, to engage in practices that nurture our understanding, and to embrace a balanced approach to life. (Το Ένα) or the One, which is the principle of unity that guides us towards wisdom and clarity, provides the foundation for a life lived in alignment with the deepest truths of existence. Unlike blind faith or unreasoned belief, the sophrosyne calls us to embrace the clarity of reason, which is the true light of the mind.

Through meditation and self-reflection, we can cultivate the harmony necessary for the proper functioning of both the mind and the body. By aligning ourselves with the logos and the nous, we achieve a state of balance that enables us to endure hardships and confront challenges with resilience. The sophrosyne is not only the key to wisdom but the pathway to a meaningful life. It is through the practice of balance, self-awareness and rationality that we can live in accordance with our highest nature and achieve the true harmony of the mind, the body and the soul.

To Ena represents the unity of the cosmos, nature and reality, but it represents the unity of our mind, body and soul also. It is only by living in alignment with this unity that we can reach true harmony and fulfil the growth of our being. Thus, the sophrosyne is the foundation for all virtues, and it is only through its cultivation that we can achieve a life of peace, clarity and understanding.
