What Have You Done?

By SoulsToWrite

Dear God, what have you done?

Joined, you say?

What did you say?

Dear God, what have you done?

You may only be my mother’s sister’s son, but you’re like a brother to me.

You cannot leave. You cannot leave me here.

Not with this, not like this.

Dear God, what have you done?

How could you join? How could you not stay?

I try not to sound of regret and I try not sound of vein,

But I cannot help but ask:

Dear God, what have you done?

Do not tell me you leave in March.

Do not tell me what she has done to them.

Do not make me admit that I’ll miss you.

And don’t you dare make me cry.

Don’t go to boot camp.

I mean, what if you die?

What if a war breaks out?

Do I have to say goodbye?

You scare me with your unfamiliar buzzed cut hair.

You scare me with your green-brown camo fanfare.

It’s all too unfair. But…

You don’t really seem to care.

So when my crying’s over,

And the sunset’s gone and done,

I’ll still say to you:

Oh dear God, what have you done?
