This is a fine story, You describe the setting and build suspense very well. You also bring in a big contemporary issue, the lithium mining or potential for it.
This is a good piece, it evokes both poverty and nature vividly.
You write vivid descriptions and a good twist. The character of the old man is described well, as is the setting.
