Going Under

I open my eyes.

I'm holding my breath, though I can't remember making the decision to. Water surrounds me on all sides. I can feel it enveloping my skin, the salty, cold ripples send a shudder through me.

How did I get here?

I look around me, still holding my breath, to see nothing. Nothing but water. Some part of me recalls beauty in the ocean like sea creatures, coral, and sea shells, but there's none of that.

It's dark. Empty. And lifeless.

I try to hold in my breath, but I'm losing air quickly. I'm forced to blow more air bubbles with each second, and soon, I've reached my last bit of oxygen.

I let it go.

There's only a short moment I go without breathing in. It's my last moment before the pain. I breathe in hard, having held my breath for what seems like forever. I'm met with a stinging sensation that goes through my throat, and further down. A fit of coughing erupts from me, though it does nothing to help my situation. If anything, it makes everything more terrifying. A few more bubbles leave me from the coughing.

I know now that this is my end.

I give in to the darkness.
