“What do you think’s out there?” I asked, turning my head towards him.

“Out there?” His eyes bounced between the stars. “I dunno. Nobody knows for sure. We sure like to act like we do.”

“What do you mean?”

“We think we understand the stars, and the sun and the universe. But I feel like there’s something more to it than just a floating ball of gas in the middle of space.”

I laughed. “Yeah, me too. Honestly, if we didn’t know better, it would sound crazy.” He turned his head towards me, his mouth twitching into a small smile. “It would. We’re walking on a sphere suspended in nothing-literally nothing. Our sphere spins around another burning sphere that spins around the center of a galaxy that spins around the middle of a galaxy cluster, and so on...that spins around the middle of the universe.”

“Wherever that is,” I finished for him.

“Yep,” he said, turning towards the sky again. “It makes me feel irrelevant.”

I laughed again. “Me too.”
