Suicide (Αυτοκτονία)

-From my text on the Logos (The Word).

It is seen as a taboo by some people. In religion, it is considered a terrible sin and in science a human phenomenon, but in philosophy it is understood as a realistic truth. A truth that makes a person succumb to the most fallible state of mind. When we examine this state of mind and the cause that manifests its appearance, we are surprised by the certain numbers of occurrences or sudden recurrences that involve suicide.

What we should focus on more is the fragile manner that our minds falter to the lethal effects of suicide. It is not only the act of suicide that should concern us, but too the absolute failure to recognise its strong persistence in our lives. No matter how many persons try to hide their feelings, they always reveal themselves in the act. It is like a surreal experience, but it is real.

When we treat its evident symptoms, we sometimes forget to study its main cause. It is not solely the measures of prevention that detects its incidence. There is always a precedence that can be concealing a deeper truth. This is the troubling aspect of suicidal thoughts and behaviour.

Those afflicted people that end their lives with the precise motive of ending their suffering, achieve physical detachment to their reality, without realising their ultimate fate. There is no just or unjust suicide, there is only suffering. With each suicide, there is a lesson to be learnt.

Suicide is a delicate subject to discuss at length. In Meleticism, it is a topic that evokes a mental challenge and understanding. To some people achieving happiness is more difficult than to experience sadness. False hopes or expectations are never pleasant to bear their depressing consequences alone.

A thing like depression or solitude can gradually affect the mind of a person. Medication is the prescribed remedy for any severity that deals with the balance or unbalance of the mind, but there is another option also and that is meditation.

Meditation does not eradicate all pain or suffering with its practice. It is not intended for that sole purpose. It is intended to reach ataraxia or inner peace. The individual that practises meditation is conforming to the realisation of life and the nature of the mind, with its connection to the body and soul. Ataraxia relieves that anguish to the point, where we accept that we are more than anguish expressed.

Philosophy teaches us to value life and seek salvation in oneself, through the sobering recognition of our limited mortality. No one deserves to withstand the unbearable affliction of suicidal thoughts or pain. A person wants to be understood, but for that to occur, that person must first understand the cause and effect of something that exists in the mind, yet it displays itself in the body with no reluctance.

The mind gravitates to our thoughts and our consciousness to the suffering. When we are trapped in this repetitive cycle of insurmountable waves of the ocean of our negative thoughts, we should seek to reach the edge, before we drown in its high tides of water.

Suicide does not completely release our burdens. Life is much more than drowning in our misery. It is about discovering that there is a way to escape the drowning. It is called self-acceptance. There is no glory in suicide. There is only suffering.

When we accept ourselves for who were and learn that we are much more than our suffering, then we begin the metaphysical journey that takes us ultimately to the One, for the Enas is ultimate freedom from the dreary shadows of reality that darken our days with despair.

The One is not a god that we can pray for intervention. Instead, it is an influence that inspires us to discover the oneness in all of us and the beautiful essence of our human nature. When we are in fear, we should seek the One. When we are in torment, we should seek its guidance in the form of our rationality and clarity.

There is no miracle that happens afterwards in this process. The greatest wonder is the challenge that one overcomes in time with fortitude. We should never forsake the unfortunate souls that either succumb to suicide or are thinking of its function. We should be more humble towards their plight or battle, because we too can easily find ourselves in their hopeless situation one day.
