He breathed in, leaning closer. And I felt it; my pain, my hurt, my broken pieces disappearing. It was strangely comforting. Then he opened his dark eyes and said "Ava, I would never hurt you. But others wouldn't be so lucky."
TWO WEEKS EARLIER
"Ava, somebody's looking at you." John murmured, leaning closer.
"What?" I twisted around, meeting his gaze. I turned so brusquely my untamed curls whipped my face. "Somebody's looking at you." he repeated more urgently.
He looked at the trees on the other side of the school campus. And then I saw what he meant.
A boy was staring at me.
He had golden hair and familiar dark eyes.
Wait...
Was that John?!
I peeled my eyes away from the staring stranger and looked at John. Then I attention swiveled back to the stranger. They looked so alike. They could be brothers or twins.
"Um, John, does your dad own a cloning machine that I do not know of?" I joked, whispering.
It was ridiculous.
I looked back at the stranger.
He was gone.
