After I closed my eyes, the world spun. Everything turned red, then purple, then blue, then green, then red again. I would lie there forever and never open my eyes again. Who was I? I was gone. I was nothing. I would steal a breath, then be gone. Never leave a trace of anything, not of breath, my soul, my eyes. Be gone. I took a breath and sank deeper into the red nothingness.
You will be forgotten, said a small voice.
I jumped, causing the red to stir a little. Who are you? I asked.
I am future.
Who am I? I asked curiously.
You are Amber.
Amber. That name sounded familiar.
Where am I? I asked.
You are asleep. You are forgotten. You are gone.
No, I said. No. I am not forgotten.
Who would remember you, Amber?
Daniel will remember me, I said.
He has already forgotten.
No! I yelled. The red started to swirl again.
You will be replaced.
What? I cried. Who will replace me?
Daniel has a wife and kids. He does not remember you.
Why will he not remember me? I asked pleadingly.
Because you are gone. He knew you once. Then he forgot about you.
NO! I screamed again. The red was spinning. Daniel will remember me forever!
You are gone, remember? Daniel cannot remember someone who is gone.
But I am not gone, I said. I am still here.
You will never wake. And Daniel will forget about you.
How can he forget me if he loved me? I asked. You cannot forget someone you loved.
Yes, but you can forget someone who is gone.
The red spun violently, then halted. The voices stopped echoing. The red shaded into green, and then into blue.
What is happening? I asked.
You are being forgotten for good.
I will not be forgotten, I said firmly, willing all the remaining strength I had into hope. Daniel will remember me.
Then I heard a great shattering sound. The blue changed into green, then into crimson.
“Amber!”
