after the poem “Die Family” by William Virgil Davis
Only the girl on the left is carefree
cross eyed
mouth sideways
entertaining the camera
The girl on the right is turned toward her
looking with curiosity at her older sister
with the same colored hair
She is leaning inward
unsure of herself
overlapping their shoulders
wanting to be close to her
hunched forward
nervously falling into her sister
and away from herself
Her eyes are locked onto the older sister
in awe of her
noting every movement
nervously and intently
knowing soon she will be gone
with the rest
but for now
she is alive through her
In the backseat of an unknown car, where they go doesn’t matter to her.
Author Notes: based on a photo of my oldest sister and I ten years ago
