Towards the Light

Towards the Light

By Gaynor Jackson - 1 Review

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat the only sound in the darkness. Where am I? How did I get here?

Fear is all I feel in the darkness. Where am I? Help me…..

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat the only sound, stronger now. Blood pumping through me, body pulsing. Feeling pain as well as fear now. Excruciating pain. Total darkness. Where am I?

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat still pounding. Other sounds now. Muffled sounds. Distant sounds. What are they? Drowning. Water crushing me. Killing me. Can't breathe. Have to get out. Help me….

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat faster and faster. Movement. Moving, water sweeping me along. Water crushing my lungs. Pain intensifying. Fear increasing. Scream for help. Can’t scream, can’t make a sound. Too much pain. Need to get out. Need to breathe.

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat comforting sound. Still alive. Feel helpless. Strength fading. Don't want to die. Want to live. More movement. More pain. Fight. Fight to survive. A small glimmer of light. Head towards the light.

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat. Louder and louder. Faster and faster. Echoing. Another heart beating with mine. Sounds getting clearer. Hope. Concentrate on the sounds. Voices! Sounds are voices! Euphoria. I’m not alone. Can they help me? Will they help me?

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat. A rhythm. My rhythm. A new sound. Music. A familiar song. A memory of being held. Her voice. Her touch. Suddenly a scream. Not me. It is her! The voice, the scream. It is her. She is in pain. Need to see her. Need to touch her. Need to get out. Need to live. The light is closer. Head towards the light.

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat. Mine. Hers. One and the same. Agony ripping me apart. More screaming. Love urges me on. Love gives me strength. I will get out. I will see her. Burning, crushing. Must fight. Must survive. A final surge. Pulling. Into the light. Too bright. Too loud.

Heartbeat.

Heartbeat beating together. On the outside now. I am out. I am alive. My head on her chest. Her arms around me. My world. My mother.
