I peck
And I peck
And I peck
Underwriter
Typewriter
Black and cold

As I Trek
And I Trek
And I Trek
Always
On the road
Of a story untold

The crumpled paper bounces off the wall, landing on the floor next to the basket.
I eyed the whiskey as it stared at me from the edge of my desk, reaching for it slowly I thought, one more drink could not hurt.

I’m just a speck
Just a speck
Just a speck
Tiny speck
Of sand
In a universe unknown

Up to my neck
To my neck
To my neck
Never going
Anywhere
There’s a block in my road

Shaking my head I crumple the sheet
cautiously feeding another into the Underwriter
Words swirl in my mind, a meaningless jumble of words, a thick jungle I must cut through again, only to find myself once again. lost.

The chime of the clock broke the silence
As if in a dream, it came from a distance
Quickly replaced with the sharp ticking

Tick
Tock
Tick
Tock

Suddenly

There was a rapping
There was a tapping
There was a knock
Upon the door

There was a squeaking
There was a shrieking
As I rose from chair
To floor

Quietly I made my way into the hall
A shadow loomed in the distance
Closing rapidly
As I approached

My foot at the floor
To stop the door
I eased the lock
And gripped the handle

As if gripped by the cold death of night
The door was frozen in place
Tightening my grip
I wrenched it open

In front of me stood children
Dressed as witches and goblins

Trick or Treat
They roared

Lost in time
A world just mine
TIs the season was quickly forgotten
Lost in the bottom of the bottles of the soften

BOO I Yelled

The little rascals ran in fright
As I watched with delight
Trick and treats were theirs no more
Piles of candies at the door

Rip, crumple, toss, score

Feeding yet another sheet into the underwriter
I felt it staring back at me, menacingly
I sip on the freshly poured glass

I can hear it in my head
Mocking me
Blocking me

It pecks
And it pecks
And it pecks
Underwriter Typewriter
Black and cold

Eating into my brain
Eating into my sole
Stealing from me
All that I know

Yet I can’t forsake her

My Underwriter

My Undertaker

As she buries me
In the cold dark night
