We never saw emotion. All we saw was him handing the gun over, not even a hint of why. It's not necessarily a problem, just something I noticed. It does let us project ourselves onto both characters though, and that's actually pretty powerful.

Definitely a feel-good story. Reading it made me feel that I've met Hunter and walked over to "Don's" office on the "outer edge of campus." It's such a nice feeling--I wish I could walk back again and scratch behind Hunter's ears.
I like this piece, your descriptions are vivid and the climax is a dtamatic twist. The relationship between the pets rings true.
Good story, it could have ended badly.
