I was heading home from my lecture, me, a simple student at Crittenden University in finances. It was starting to get dark out as the cold veil of winter fell upon the establishment. I started pacing to my apartment block faster to not freeze out in the cold. I finally reached my dorm and lied down on my couch, exhausted. I then grabbed a few things to eat and started practicing more and more for my finals. I was so tired... So tired I was about to fall asleep on my worksheet until I heard my doorbell ring. I walked to the door and opened it only to see a very tall man in a red sweater. I said:
-Hello, can I help you, sir?
He lifted his head slowly, I was getting scared but kept my cool. I didn't want to have any assumptions on this man who could've just gotten lost in the apartment block.
-Hello Mrs.Williams, there is a murderer on the loose. Stay indoors at night and don't come out until the sun is up. Lock all your doors.
I was so tired I wasn't even shocked by what he just said. I presumed it was maybe a janitor or concierge, but shrugged his advice. I nodded and made sure I did lock my doors and windows. I headed to my bed and crumbled of exhaustion.
The next day, I was heading back again from class when I heard a big bang in the apartment block. I guessed my neighbor's heater overheated again and just popped, it was nothing bad. But this time, it was obnoxiously loud... I got scared and thought it blew up and may have harmed my neighbor. I ran up the stairs but his doors were locked and there was no smell, so I ignored it and headed to my room. I turned on the TV and looked at the news. I thought it was weird there was no broadcast on the "murderer" the man in the red cardigan had warned me about. The doorbell suddenly ran again. I opened and saw the same man than yesterday. He said:
-Hello Mrs.Williams, there is a murderer on the loose. Stay indoors at night and don't come out until the sun is up. Lock all your doors.
-But sir, I said, I looked on the television and there is no broadcast about any murder...
-Lock all your doors.
This was the last thing he said before closing the door. I didn't want to risk it so I locked my doors. I was about to go to sleep when I heard a doorbell ring over and over again. I opened my door but noticed it wasn't my doorbell ringing, but my neighbor's. It was that man again! I said:
-Sir! You are disturbing us, he probably isn't home and will come back soon.
He turned his head to me and said, again in a cold tone:
-Lock. Your. Doors.
I did so immediately and ran to my bed.
The next morning I checked on the TV again and this time, murder was committed. The worst part? It was my neighbor who was killed. I was extremely scared... I suddenly heard my doorbell ring again. I was terrified and slowly headed towards the door to see the man in the red sweater again. He said, almost mechanically:
-Hello Mrs.Williams, there is a murderer on the loose. Stay indoors at night and don't come out until the sun is up. Lock all your doors.
-O-ok, I said afraid for my life...
I locked all my doors but forgot the window in my bedroom. Mind you, I live on the 14th floor, so I opened it a little to get some fresh air. I stood up from my behind and starting walking out when I heard:
-Mrs.Williams...
A chill ran down my spine... I then heard:
-Didn't I tell you to lock all your doors and windows? Otherwise, someone can get in, someone like me...
