You have a vivid imagination to think of this concept.
This is very good evocation of an only too plausible situation. I felt for your characters both before and after the bombshell of Dad catching the virus.
Most people are a mix of faults and virtues. Most people have been right about some things and wrong about others. Unfortunately we are taught that everyone is pure good or pure evil, and that's got worse over the last few years. If taken too far, it leads to people being expected to be better than anyone on this planet ever has been or ever could be. You may not be right all the time, but you could still be right about things that matter.
You start out subtle and end it shockingly. This is a very good piece with convincing detail delivered with economy.
I enjoyed this story, its plausible, timely and full of vivid descriptions.
It takes great skill to say so much with so few words. I'd have given the daughter a name but that's a minor quibble in a fine story.
As a walker and nature lover I can relate to your narrator. This is a detailed, evocative piece. It can hold its own with many works in traditional media.
You're entitled to say we still don't have an ideal world without being stigmatised for it.
